Blessed Richard Thirkeld
Born
at Cunsley, he was ordained in 1579, after which he said 'God alone knows how
great a gift this si that has been conferred on us this day.'
Some called him the old man!
Within four years he had been martyred.
The area of his work was in and around York and it was at the prison on the bridge over the Ouse that he was arrested while visiting a prisoner. He himself was put in the Kidcote Prison till his trial.
On May 27 he was taken to the castle; he wore a cassock. Crowds of people came to see him. He was found guilty of reconciling people to the church.
On May 28 he again had to appear before the judge. an eyewitness said that he was interiorly recollect. He was sentenced ' to be carried back to the place form whence he came, and from there to be drawn to the place of execution, and there hanged, cut down alive, dismembered, bowelled and quartered.'
He prayed' haec dies quam fecit dominus....' (' This is the day which the Lord has made.')
He suffered and died at York on May 29, 1583.
