Saint Philip Howard

Because of the new laws against Catholics, some decided to leave the country in order to be free to practice their religion.

One such person was Lord Philip Howard, Earl of Arundel.

He wrote a letter to the Queen explaining that it was for his soul's health and the service of God-not a lack of loyal affection for Her Majesty. This was to be delivered when he had gone. However, a domestic betrayed him and he was arrested as he was boarding a ship.

He was committed to the Tower of London. His brothers, uncle and several of his kindred, friends and servants were, at the same time, sent to several prisons.

He was fined £10, 000 in the star chamber and sentenced to be imprisoned.

Some years later on April 14, 1589, he was sentenced to death for harbouring and relieving priests. He was not executed, but allowed to die a lingering death; he was in prison for 10 years and during that time he gave himself up to a strict penitential course of life, and to continual prayer and contemplation. he was a great edification to all who knew him.

He died in the Tower of London on October 19, 1595.
